German engineered high speed milling CNC and VMC 2) DESIGN
If you’ve ever gotten behind the wheel of a Mercedes or BMW, you probably felt a sense quality before you ever put the key in the ignition. It all starts with the soft, snug thud of a precision door closing behind you — and that gets your user experience off on the right foot. Well, Datron brings this same high-caliber German engineering to the CNC industry. We understand that no two challenges are the same and our forward-thinking design yields machines with the flexibility to perform multiple functions — from micro-milling and drilling to cutting, routing, and engraving. This eliminates the need to move work-pieces all over the plant floor to get them from conception to completion. In order to deliver this level of agility, Datron had to develop physical components and attributes that had never before been seen in the market. These include:
Industrial-Strength Chassis
Modular (User Changeable Parts)
Large Bed & Machining Envelope
Gantry-Style Portal
Small Footprint
Professional Enclosure
Industrial-Strength Chassis:
Everyone knows that if you flick your finger against steel you can hear a reverberation, but if you try the same thing with concrete what you hear is a muffled thud (and perhaps your own screams of pain). That’s because concrete absorbs vibration. So, Datron engineers decided to incorporate an aged polymer concrete into the design of our machines. This rigid material is actually cast in a single piece that forms the foundation of our chassis. Some of our competitors, on the other hand, rely heavily on the use welded steel parts in their chassis design. But, steel plates that are joined together by welding are susceptible to the effects of vibration. The welding process requires superheating of both solder and sheet metal in order to join plates together to form larger pieces required for the chassis. Within each cooled and hardened welded joint there exists significant tension that naturally is looking to escape. Vibration produced by the machine’s motor provides a means for that escape. When the tension is released due to this vibration, the chassis becomes deformed — perhaps not enough to be noticed by the human eye, but enough to sacrifice accuracy and repeatability.

Modular User-Changeable Parts: Through 35 years of experience in the design and service of CNC machines, Datron has found that our success is based on the partnerships that we form with our customers — and empowering them with knowledge of our equipment helps them to use it more efficiently. With that empowerment in mind, our R&D group set out to design machines that feature accessible mechanics and electronics and facilitate the easy replacement or exchange of parts by the operator. They also developed operational parameters whereby the machine actually protects itself. For example, it will not permit the operator from driving an axis beyond the end of the ballscrew. Or, in the event that an operator drove a tool into the bed, the tool would break, but the machine shuts off, preventing further damage to the bed or valuable blanks. Further, they developed a Microsoft® Windows®-based control that is familiar to the user and automatically re-calibrates the machine following part exchange to guarantee accuracy and repeatability. With an overall machine design where service requires a basic skill level equivalent to turning a screwdriver, our customers are able to replace parts themselves in a time frame that is faster than any service person could even get on site.

It all starts in Germany. Have you ever gotten behind the wheel of a German-made automobile and noticed that things just make sense? The precision of the doors make that special sound when you shut them behind you. All the instruments are in the right place. And the motor just hums. That’s because German engineering is based on due diligence — solving problems before they arise. At Datron we look down the road to gain a firm understanding of exactly how our equipment will be used and to provide our customers with everything they could possibly need to make their job easier. This includes everything from precisely made components that are easy to swap to exclusive use of low voltage that poses no risk during the replacement of those components. The majority of our parts can be swapped within 30 minutes.

Large Bed & Machining Envelope: If you’re considering Datron, it’s probably because you make small parts. But, that doesn’t mean that you don’t need a large machining area. After all, you may want to batch-machine many small parts rather than producing them one-up. With that in mind, the VelociRaptor, Datron’s flagship product, was designed with a large bed that delivers 40” x 27.6” x 9.6” of machining area. This large envelope accommodates different fixturing and workholding solutions that facilitate quick job setup and change over to maximize production efficiency. Datron’s Maximiser features our largest bed and provides a machining area of 60” x 98” x 7”.

Gantry-Style Portal: All Datron machines feature a gantry-style portal (or bridge) on which the machining spindle is mounted. The gantry can move the spindle in both X and Y coordinates while the spindle moves itself up and down in the Z axis. The gantry portal is another design feature that helps to increase working area. It is also a superior method of moving the machining spindle to cover greater distances or in situations where the work path changes frequently.

Small Footprint: Datron’s notoriously small footprint and use of 208 volt, single-phase power gives you the flexibility to just park it anywhere. Plus, as projects change one person with a hand pallet truck can easily move it to another manufacturing cell. If you’re really tight on space, our miniRaptor has a footprint of 51” x 51” x 77” and still provides 20” x 20” x 9.5” of machining area!

Professional Enclosure: All Datron machines include a full machining-area enclosure with a door safety interlock system. This industrial enclosure minimizes noise and contains chips and debris that result from the machining process. The interlock system prevents the machine from running while the door is open and helps manufacturers to comply with safety standards and mandates.
